Player ratings: Aston Vila vs Manchester United

 Starting line up:

Dean Henderson: 6. Did what he had to do. Couldn't stop the one headed goal but can't blame him for it.

Diogo Dalot: 3. I would have given it a definite 2 if this was a competitive game. Useless in attack, attempted a small number of crosses, which too failed. Defensively, invisible.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah: 6. A good performance starting initially at CB then moving to a CDM role in the second half. Would have been a 7 but committed too many fouls which would have been disastrous during a competitive game.

Harry Maguire: 5. Solid defensively for most of the game but the little time he switched off, he was made to pay with Ollie Watkins making no mistake. Should've been better in attach while going up for corners and free-kicks.

Luke Shaw: 6. A decent pre-season performance but needs to build more fitness and he'll be back as good as ever. A decent performance from him both in defence and in the attack, putting some threatening low crosses in the first half.

Scott McTominay: 7. Lively and energetic, making good dribbles and being a central focus in midfield. Bought off to give game time to youngsters in the second half.

Donny Van de Beek: 7. The first time Manchester United fans got to see him play and he showed some promise even though he didn't end up influencing the game as much as he would have liked. Always got into good goalscoring positions in the build-up but his teammates struggled to work the ball to him. Points for the effort.

Marcus Rashford: 4. Poor performance. You'd expect more from him after the promise shown last season. But looks tired as ever continuing his recent poor form off the back of last season.

Jesse Lingard: 5. Worked hard and tried his best even nearly getting himself a goal but it looks as if the player from before is gone forever.

Daniel James: 7. Man of the Match, at least from the United team. Made good runs and accurate crosses, looking a menace whenever attacking. Also made some defensive contributions, winning back the ball a few times.

Odion Ighalo: 3. No influence whatsoever on the game. Rightfully bought off in the second half. He's done well on his loan spell but he was always a backup until Manchester United signed a proper RW or a back-up forward. His loan spell won't be extended.

Substitutes:

Ethan Galbraith for Scott McTominay (45'): 5. Got some first-team experience but and did fine except for losing the ball once which nearly gave Aston Villa the goal. Left the hard work to the more experienced players understandably.

Teden Mengi for Odion Ighalo (60'): 6. Recently received a lot of praise from Solskjaer and got some more game time with the first team as a result of his convincing display at Youth Level. Solid in defence but left most of the passing and playing out from the back to Maguire.

Brandon Williams for Luke Shaw (70'): 5. Performed his defensive duties but did not help in the offense.

Lee Grant for Dean Henderson (75'): N/A. Had no work. Just some game time for the now 4th choice goalkeeper.

Anthony Elanga for Marcus Rashford (75'): N/A. Got experience but made no impact.
